History of Rotan

Rotan was established in 1907.

Originally a muddy tent town, Rotan is now a modern small Texas town. Approximately 65 miles from the officially designated center of the state, Rotan is truly "Deep in the Heart of Texas"!

Agriculture is still an important factor in the local economy, however, it is augmented with abundant gypsum deposits and productive oil fields. It is home to a major plant of National Gypsum Co.

Rotan is also home to former Washington Redskins quarterback "Slingin" Sammy Baugh, and rancher Buster Welch, a legend in the world of cutting horses.

The town is currently in a renovation project of the downtown area with the community banded together in an effort to revitalize and rejuvenate the main street and some of the vacant buildings left empty in recent years.

Visit Rotan to see what's happening in a Genuine Texas Town!
